The Secret to Choosing the Right Paint Color Every Time

Picking paint should be simple… but somehow it never is.

You walk into the store for “just a white,” and suddenly you’re staring at 42 options, wondering how they all look completely different.

And then you get it on the wall… and it’s not what you thought at all.

Let me save you from that mistake.

1. Test it on your actual wall

Paint changes all day long.

What looks perfect at noon might look yellow at night. That’s why I always paint big swatches directly on the wall and watch them for a full day.

This one step will save you from repainting later.

2. Start with colors that already work

If you feel stuck, don’t overthink it.

Some colors just work.

One of my favorite combinations:

  • Walls: Snowbound
  • Trim and cabinets: Alabaster

It’s soft, clean, and gives you that cozy cottage feel without trying too hard.

3. Look at the whole room

Paint is not the star of the show… it’s the background.

Your rugs, furniture, wood tones, and lighting all affect how that color will feel in your home.

If those don’t work together, the paint won’t fix it.

Want the exact colors I actually use?

This is just the starting point.

Inside my Paint Playbook, I share:

  • 15 tried and true paint palettes
  • The exact colors I’ve used in my own homes and cottages
  • What to use on walls, trim, cabinets, and even front doors
  • How to make your whole home feel pulled together

Once you get your paint right, everything else gets easier.
